'Bidjar! Bidjar! The carpet of steel!' the usual shout at any respectable auction. Woven wet and intermittently hammered with a comb, these rugs are extremely durable, suitable for any high-traffic area in the house or office. The typical pattern is a hexagon covered in the Herati pattern, usually in subdued burgundies, reds, greys or blues. The medallion can vary widely in shape and size, usually with an echoing border. As weavers are extremely nomadic, floral influences from elsewhere sometimes appear, and add to the beauty of one of Iran's best rugs.
